Fermenta to launch Solein-powered protein bars in US ushering in a new era of clean, functional nutrition

Health and performance nutrition start-up Fermenta is set to introduce one of the first Solein-powered consumer products in the United States with the launch of its Gutsy protein bars in Q1 2026.

The bars – gluten-free, animal-free, and designed to support digestive wellness – mark a significant milestone in the commercialisation of Solein, a novel protein developed by Finnish biotech firm Solar Foods.

Fermenta’s debut product line aims to meet rising consumer demand for functional foods that deliver high protein, gut health benefits, and reduced sugar – all without compromising taste. “We want to create delightful moments for consumers and offer sustainable, clean products that support digestive wellness,” said Fermenta CEO John Gibb.

“Solein is a groundbreaking ingredient that supports our sustainability ambition and offers exceptional nutritional value.”

Solein is produced via gas fermentation – a highly efficient, scalable process that uses carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and electricity to create a nutrient-rich protein with minimal environmental impact. Unlike traditional protein sources such as soy, pea, or whey, Solein contains all nine essential amino acids, iron, vitamin B12, and 10% dietary fibre, while remaining free from cholesterol and saturated fats.

Fermenta’s Gutsy bars will be among the first Solein-powered products available to U.S. consumers, following successful launches in Singapore. The company plans a limited release in early 2026, positioning itself at the forefront of a new wave of clean-label, performance-focused nutrition.

Troels Nørgaard, chief commercial and product officer at Solar Foods, emphasised Solein’s versatility: “Fermenta’s functional protein bars are just one example of how Solein works in final products. It’s a highly adaptable ingredient that excels in taste, nutrition, and sustainability.”

Solar Foods has signed multiple supply agreements in the US and is actively developing its own product concepts – including protein drinks and ready-to-mix shakes – to showcase Solein’s potential. At the recent Supply Side Global event in Las Vegas, the company unveiled new flavour profiles to support broader adoption across the health and performance category.

As the market for functional, plant-based, and sugar-reduced nutrition continues to expand, Fermenta’s launch signals a shift toward next-generation ingredients that deliver on both health and environmental impact.
